When God Feels Silent: Finding Him in the Little Things
“And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’” —Genesis 1:29
When God feels silent, even the smallest reminder of His goodness can become meaningful. A few days ago, God spoke to me through the taste of a delicious strawberry.
When God Feels Silent
The past number of months in my life have been pretty quiet on the telephone line between me and God. I am sure there are plenty of times that He has spoken to me, but I have been unable to hear for a variety of reasons.
My daily life has been especially full of responsibilities, and one difficult relationship in particular has been on my mind all the time. Maybe these worries have been crowding out my ability to perceive God’s voice. On the other hand, maybe God has chosen to be somewhat silent for a time—perhaps to bring me through a time of training and into more maturity in Him.
Whatever the reason, I have heard from God less often in recent months, and I really do miss His voice. I have begun to ask, seek, and knock on God’s door, waiting for Him to begin to speak again. Scripture promises that God will answer my request if I don’t give up.
I wonder if you have found yourself in a similar situation. What do you do when God feels silent?
Finding God in the Little Things
A few days ago, I ate a particularly juicy and sweet summer strawberry. Later that morning, when I remembered that strawberry, God highlighted to me the fact that He made it.
He made delicious, juicy, wonderful fruit for us to enjoy! He did not have to make it that way, but He chose to. In His creativity, He wanted to make good things.
Since words from the Lord have been few and far between, I quickly held on to that thought. It may sound trite, but I began to intentionally bring to mind a list of delicious fruits that are coming into ripeness this summer. I began to thank God for them: strawberries, peaches, tomatoes, blackberries, and blueberries.
“Thank You, God, for the taste of Your sweetness in the sweetness of the summer fruit.”
What to Remember When God Feels Silent
If you have been spiritually dry, my encouragement to you is to lean into even the tiniest reminder of God that you can find.
Avoid cynicism. Don’t dismiss a whisper from God because it seems silly to you. Seek that connection with God the same way that a small child seeks connection with their mom. Wait patiently through the dry season, and drink every drop from the occasional oasis.
When God feels silent, remember that He still knows how much you and I need Him. He will give each one of us His sweetness again if we don’t give up.
