Dwelling in God’s Shelter

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2

One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 91 because it testifies to the security of those who trust God. It may have been written by a priest who wished to assure God’s people that if they were willing to trust God and make Him their refuge and dwelling place, no harm would befall them. He recounts that God will save them from the snare of the enemy.

The most common weapon used by the enemy is to ensnare God’s people with fear – fear for their health, fear for their children, relationships, job or the future. But God wants His children to dwell in the safety of His shelter; a place of refuge and security. The imagery of God covering them with the feathers of His wings paints a beautiful picture of The Most High God: Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. (Psalm 91:3-4)

God’s Word stands true for you today. He covers our fears, our insecurities, and the terror that grips us as we stand under the shadow of His Presence. The key in receiving His protection is that you must make the Most High your dwelling. (v.9) God is waiting for you to draw near to Him; He is waiting for you to seek Him as your refuge. He has promised that when you do, He will command His angels to guard you in all of your ways. (v.11)

Are you overcome with fear today? Stand in the shelter of the Most High and you will find yourself resting in the shadow of His wings.

Heavenly Father, I am overcome with fear. I choose to make You my dwelling place – to seek You and to draw near to You. Thank you for Your promise that You will protect me and cause me to rest in Your loving arms. In Jesus’ name, Amen
