Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; a day when we honor the life and achievement of Martin Luther King, Jr., American Civil Rights leader. He specifically worked towards ending racial segregation and promoting racial equality. He was an advocate of non violent protest and was the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. His most famous speech was titled: “I Have a Dream”. Assassinated in 1968, we honor him as a man of integrity, following a call; following a dream to honor people of all color as those made in God’s image with purpose and destiny.
Martin Luther King was a Christ follower and it was God who gave him this dream; God who anointed him to preach equality and God who instructed him each step of the way.
As we honor a man who gave his life for this cause, let us look through the lenses of Scripture to reflect on this subject.
For God shows no partiality (Romans 2:11)
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female, he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. (Galatians 3:26-27)
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility. (Ephesians 2:14)
Take a moment and read Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. it will bring tears to your eyes and remind us that we are all equal in God’s eyes. Dr. King saw this. He died for the cause and his work continues as we commit to follow this same dream.
