People of Hope

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

I Peter 3:15

Peter encourages the persecuted scattered Christians to put their hope in Christ and to be prepared to express that hope to others. It is interesting to note that in the midst of persecution, the testimony of Christ spread like a wild fire. In the midst of the trials of life is often the time when our testimony of the faithfulness of Christ comes alive. People are best able to see the enduring life of Christ in us when we are suffering and yet still testifying of God’s goodness.

Are you going through tough times right now? Use this opportunity to share the hope of Christ with others. Your testimony of standing with Christ through the trials will bear fruit that you may never see but will have lasting effect in the lives of others. When I am under persecution or suffering under a trial, I am tempted to have a “pity party” and then hope that someone will notice my suffering. When I take my eyes off self and place them on Jesus, remembering His trials, I am humbled and ready to testify of God’s goodness. In no way does this minimize our sufferings, but it does give suffering a higher purpose and brings glory to God.

Heavenly Father,

Help me to keep my eyes on You during seasons of trials. Give me the courage to take my eyes off of self and look to You as my source of life and comfort. Give me opportunities to demonstrate your faithfulness to others.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
