God’s Two-Edged Sword

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is sharp and divides soul from spirit. Our soul is our mind, will and emotions – that which defines our personality. Our spirit is a place where the Holy Spirit comes to dwell when we invite Jesus Christ into our heart. When we submit to God’s Word in obedience, our  soul is led by the Holy Spirit. Our mind, our will and our emotions follow the will of God. God’s Word judges the thoughts and attitudes of our heart and if we submit to the Word, our thoughts and attitudes will line up with the mind of Christ.

When we seek to know God’s will by reading and meditating on God’s Word, the Lord divides our thoughts from His thoughts and our ways from His ways. Isaiah describes God’s Word: As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than you ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts…So is my word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:9-11)

God’s Word has a purpose in our lives and as we allow it to separate our thoughts from His thoughts we are able to discern His will.  We simply do not think like God! His ways are much higher! Are you facing a decision in your life? Look to God’s Word which is sharp enough to cut away the confusion and bring you clarity and truth.

Heavenly Father,

I am seeking your Word for direction. Help me to discern your ways and your thoughts. I surrender my plans to your higher purposes.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
