No one can escape times of feeling overwhelmed. As Christians, we may think we should be immune to the stresses of life; that we should be able to handle the rough times with grace and fortitude. If you have ever believed that lie you know it can put you into a tailspin of thoughts.
God where are you?
Why is this happening to me?
Why am I handling this as if I have no faith?
My husband went to the beach this weekend and took a picture that gives expression to the feeling of being barraged on all sides; a picture of water rushing over, in and around our lives. It is true that a picture is worth a thousand words so here goes.
So what do we do when we expect more from ourselves than giving way to the days or even seasons of being overwhelmed with life? As Christians, the first step is to recognize that Jesus came to save the lost, to heal the sick, to deliver the oppressed, and yes…. even to help those who feel as though life has become too intense and joy is only a faint remembrance.
We start with the basics. Jesus has not abandoned you and He is near. His love is supernatural and He brings all things under his authority.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purposes. (Romans 8:28)
I will never leave you or forsake you… (Hebrews 13:5)
God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things. (Ephesians 1:22)
So Jesus is in charge friends. He will not forsake you during this season of feeling anxious or overwhelmed with life. He loves you unconditionally and He will work this out for good. As you consider these scriptures, here are some practical ways to deal with out-of-control circumstances.
Spend time with a trusted friend and share what is going on in your life. Ask them to pray, to listen, and to walk with you through this season. Pray for the Lord to give you eyes to see where He is at work. Find ways to take care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise (even if you only have a few minutes a day), play worship music, and enjoy moments during the day to reflect on the ways you have seen the Holy Spirit activated in your life. Remembering these things brings hope. Consider that whatever you are going through is not forever; that Jesus will lead you through the dark valley into His light. He’s good at that!
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil for you are with me, your rod and staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
Friends, we all go through trials; times where we think we will never get out of the valley. But as you seek the Lord as your Great Shepherd, He will lead you out. It is His promise.
