Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly of the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
Hebrews 10:19-24
The word “therefore” in Hebrews 10:19 refers to the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins once and for all. We should, therefore, have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place. The tabernacle, and later the temple, had three parts: the outer court, the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place. The Gentiles were allowed in the outer court, the priests (Levites) served in the Holy Place, and only the High Priest was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place. When Jesus died, the veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn in two, representing the access we now have into the very Presence of God. The writer of Hebrews tells us that now we can draw near because Jesus’ blood has cleansed us from sin. As we hold onto this hope, we know that He is faithful, and, out of grateful hearts, we will be able to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ.
