God Works for Good

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

I believe there is no passage of Scripture that has been more comforting for believers during trials than Romans 8:28. The verdict is out.

We live in a world of tension between good and evil, suffering, and God’s glory yet to be revealed. Paul reassures Christians that God is in control, that He will work all things out for good for those who have been called according to His purpose.

Believers have a purpose to love the Lord with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Loving the Lord completely does not mean we will not experience trouble, but it does mean that the Lord will take those things in our lives, those “sandpaper” experiences, and turn them into smooth places. He will use those experiences to make us more like Him and to comfort others with the comfort that we have received. (II Corinthians 7:5-7) Christians throughout the centuries have been comforted, not only by receiving comfort from God during difficult times, but also by having the privilege of comforting others when they need it, just as they, themselves, were comforted. God does not will all things, but He is at work in all things. I know if I keep my eyes on the One who loves me, I will be strengthened, not just to “endure,” but to live victoriously.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you that I have been called for a purpose and that my momentary affliction will be used for good. Help me to keep my eyes on You and remember that Your purpose will prevail.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
