Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

I Samuel 17:36

As Christians, we are enlisted in God’s army and we take our orders from our Commander-in-Chief. He has called us to “advance His kingdom” forcefully. (Matthew 11:12) Often we are so busy fighting our own battles that we miss the one that the Lord has called us to fight. Paul tells us that we “struggle not against flesh and blood but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

(Ephesians 6:11) We are told to put on the full armor of God to stand against the schemes of the evil one. The good news is that the Lord equips us for battle with His Word, His truth, and His full armor. I have come to realize that I am most effective in serving the Lord when I am aware that the Lord is with me and the battle is His: This is what the Lord says to you: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours but God’s. (II Chronicles 20:15)

We must trust Him to defeat the giants in our life. What prevents you from having this same attitude of trust?

Heavenly Father,

I have enlisted in Your army as a believer in Jesus Christ. Sometimes life seems to be one battle after another, and I get weary and discouraged. Help me remember that You are always with me and that the battle belongs to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
