I’m not sure how it happened, but summer break is over, and the school year is in full swing. As much as I love summer, I’m thankful for our school routine. I love watching my kids learn and grow, too. They light up when they tell me all they’ve learned, and who they played with.
This time of year resurfaces my own back-to-school memories; a new outfit, new shoes, new books, new classmates. I remember the excitement of starting new classes and tackling new subjects. I remember those first-day jitters, too. Will I find all of my classes? Will I make friends? Will I fit in?
It’s exciting to start something new. It can also be daunting. As we prepare for a new Bible Study, I want to acknowledge every emotion and hesitation you might be feeling. I hope you’re like a little schoolgirl, new book and pen in hand, bursting with excitement to see your friends and meet your teachers. But if your mind is preoccupied with the what ifs – what if I can’t find my classroom, and I don’t know the answers – that’s okay, too.
I joined a Making Space for God study six years ago, shortly after my daughter was born. Within mere weeks of giving birth, I began to feel isolated and lonely. My heart burst with love for my baby, but I missed conversations with other adults. I missed the satisfaction of a completed task list. Honestly, I missed my old self. I needed support and encouragement as I navigated the season of new motherhood, and so I plugged into the Drawing Near to God community. Now, I can’t imagine my life without this ministry. I’ve deepened my relationship with the Lord and grown in my understanding of scripture. I’ve been challenged to use my gifts to bless other people and given the space and encouragement to try new things. I’ve made lifelong friends and been challenged by wise mentors. I’ve found my people.
Maybe you feel at home in a small group setting. You’ve spent intentional time studying scripture and immersing yourself in intentional community. Maybe you’ve been involved with Drawing Near to God far longer than my tawdry six years. Welcome back, friend. Welcome home. We’ve saved your place, and we’re excited to have you back.
Maybe you’ve never opened a Bible in your life. Maybe you’re a brand new Christian, or you’re on the fence when it comes to Christianity. Maybe, like me, you’re in a transitional phase of life, or you’re lonely and overwhelmed. Welcome, beloved. You belong here. Your questions, doubts, and insecurities are fair game. We have a seat with your name on it. We have friends, teachers, and facilitators ready to meet you and fold you into our community. We can’t wait to meet you.
When it comes to new beginnings, we’re all little girls again, waiting for school to begin. We want to succeed, we want to belong. We’re a mix of excitement, jitters, and apprehension. Trying new things can be uncomfortable, but it’s made easier in community. This ministry is your community. We are your people. So, pick out your favorite outfit, pick up your fresh new study guide, and come take your seat on Thursday morning. I can’t wait to see you there.
