God’s Grace Gifts

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; it if is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8

Paul tells the Christian community that by God’s grace we have each been given spiritual gifts to use, serving each other for the glory of God. He describes our mutual dependence on one another and the importance of exercising these gifts with a spirit of humility. Unity in diversity is the theme that runs throughout this passage. As the body of Christ, each part functions differently, supplying the body with what the other parts lack and promoting the common good. When we, as the body of Christ, effectively and with humility operate in our God given gifts, we become a kingdom united, not divided. Jesus tells us that a kingdom divided cannot stand. (Mark 3:24) No wonder the enemy tries to get a foothold in churches, seeking to divide the body through pride, through competition, and any other means he can use to keep the body from functioning as God intended – in unity and in power. We would be wise to pray for one another, encouraging one another in the gifts that God has given us to be used for His glory!

What gifts has the Lord given you to use to build up the body of Christ? If you are unsure of your gifts, consider the things that you like to do – the things that you are good at and the things at which others say you are good. Pray for opportunities to use your gifts and encourage others in their gifts. Paul tells the Corinthian church to eagerly desire spiritual gifts – that we are one body with different parts. (I Corinthians 12) Each part of the body has a function, and without it, the whole body would suffer. As members of Christ’s body, let us freely offer our gifts back to the Lord!

Heavenly Father, I have neglected the gifts You have given me. I offer myself to You as a living sacrifice, using the gifts You have given me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen
