Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses.

I Kings 8:56

After the Lord delivered David from his enemies, he sang praises to the Lord, As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. (II Samuel 22:31) David knew God’s Word to be flawless and His ways to be perfect.

The last words of testimony that David gave indicate his absolute trust that the Lord would fulfill every promise that He made to him: Is not my house right with God? Has He not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will He not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire? (II Samuel 23:5)

God is The Promise Keeper; He keeps His Word and His Word never fails! Life causes us to doubt and lose trust in promises given and promises received. Everywhere we turn we see broken promises: marriages that break up, parents that are inconsistent with their promises, books that promise us security, and health that fails us. We put our hope in promises, and when they are unfulfilled, disillusionment crouches at the door of our hearts. God promised Moses that He would take the Israelites into the Promised Land. Although the people grumbled, doubted God’s Word, and failed to live up to their promise to worship God alone, God took them into His Promised Land. There was one problem, however. The generation of Israelites that disobeyed and did not trust the Lord were not welcomed into God’s Promised Land.

Like the Israelites, we fall into doubting God’s promises to us in His Word. We lean on our own understanding and past experiences where we have been let down by a word of promise and trust has been eroded.

Proverbs addresses this problem: Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5) The key to entering into the promises of God is trusting Him – not leaning on your own understanding or experiences, but looking to God to make your path straight. Be secure in the knowledge that the Lord will fulfill every promise to us because His Word is trustworthy.

What about you? Have you doubted that the Lord will fulfill His promises to you? Look up rather than down at the circumstances that cause you to doubt. His promises never fail.

Heavenly Father,

I choose to trust You today in all things. I have doubted that You would ever answer my prayers or fulfill my dreams. I have believed that You planted the seeds of promise in my heart, but I have refused to water them by trusting You. Forgive me for leaning on my past experiences and for doubting Your Word.
