Light of the World

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1

The people of Isaiah’s time walked in darkness, just as many people today walk in darkness. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, came as prophesied in Isaiah bringing a “great light” into the world: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light, on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2)
This great light provides a hope for all mankind. The prophecies in Isaiah describe and point to the light of hope for all those in darkness.
Psalm 27, written by King David, describes the Lord as light and salvation and the stronghold of his life. His light breaks through the darkness and overtakes his fear. This psalm is a confident prayer to God to deliver him from his enemies, saying, Though an army besiege, me my heart will not fear. (Psalm 27:3) David knew that the one place where he would be safe was in the light of God – a place where his enemies had to flee. He knew that God would keep him in a safe dwelling place, hiding him in the shelter of his tabernacle.
He ends the Psalm with a great statement of confidence that he is certain that he will see the goodness of God in the land of the living. He must wait for the Lord and be strong. (vv. 13-14)
God is at work in us as we go about our daily routine of life. He is our light and our salvation which enables us to not have fear. God is with us as we seek His help in times of struggle; God is with us as we seek His direction. Emmanuel, “God with us,” lights our path when the road seems dark.
What are you facing today that makes you fearful? Remember that when your enemies besiege you, God will make them stumble and fall in the darkness. God will light up your path and you will find your way.
Heavenly Father,
You are my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? You are the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? You light my path when I fall into darkness. Blessed be the name of the Lord!
In Jesus’ name, Amen
