Looking Back

Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.

I Chronicles 16:11-12

In this passage in I Chronicles, we are admonished to look to the Lord and His strength and to remember all that He has done. As we remember the faithfulness of God, we are strengthened in our faith. Healing takes place when we look back and see the faithfulness of God. God encourages people to look back at the rock from which they were hewn. (Isaiah 51:1-2) Israel was told to look back to Abraham and examine his faith. They could see that the Lord was true to His promises to bring forth the nation of Israel from Abraham’s seed. When we read the story of Abraham and God’s faithfulness to him our own faith increases: By faith, Abraham, even though he was past age and Sarah herself was barren was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise. (Hebrews 11:11) Abraham was fully persuaded that God would fulfill His promise to him to have children that would one day become the nation of Israel. As we remember the wonders of the faithfulness of God, our faith grows.

Paul reminded the Corinthian church that they were once adulterers, idolaters, and thieves, but now they were washed, sanctified, and justified as believers in Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 6:9-11) When you are discouraged, look back at all the wonders God has worked in your life and those around you. You may not be where you want to be, but when you look back at where you were in your early walk with the Lord and see how He has changed you, hope increases. Look to the Lord and His strength and remember what He has done. (I Chronicles 16:11-12)

Heavenly Father,

Help me to recall all that You have done for me. Let me be ever mindful of Your faithfulness, and when I am discouraged, help me to draw from the past where You have been my rock and have been so faithful.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
