Our Counselor, the Holy Spirit

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.
John 14:16

Jesus promised His disciples that His Father would send the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, to them when He returned to the Father. The Holy Spirit would lead them into truth and teach them all they needed to know. David was anointed by the Spirit to be king of Israel, but he lived on the other side of the cross, and the Holy Spirit had not yet come to dwell permanently within believers. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the believers gathered in Jerusalem and continues to come and to live in believers today.

Jesus told His disciples that apart from Him they could do nothing, but when the Holy Spirit came they had the power to live the Christian life and be witnesses to the world. We all need the power of God to swim upstream against the tide of the world. The world lures us towards material gain and power, but God’s power through His Holy Spirit leads us in a life of service and humility. The counsel of the Holy Spirit often runs contrary to the counsel of the world, and it is critical that as believers we willingly yield our lives to Him.

Jesus asked His Father to send the Counselor after He left this earth.

He knew that we would need His guidance in order to live a Godly life and impact the world in which we live. Have you asked the Holy Spirit to fill your life with His power?

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your power and direct me today as I seek to do Your will.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
