Rebellion and the Fall

And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good from evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

Genesis 3:22-23

Throughout the ages, mankind has rebelled against God, seeking to be equal to God. Although we are made in God’s image, repeatedly we have sought to be above God, our Creator. Often it is subtle, but always it leads to our downfall because we were created by God to be under His care and authority. When we come out from under His authority by rebelling against Him, we suffer the consequences. Read the story of the fall of man in the garden in Genesis 3 and the subsequent fall in Genesis 11 at the Tower of Babel. How do you fall into the trap of seeking to be like God?

Heavenly Father,

Why is it that I like to be in control of my own life? In truth, some days I am pretty good at it but other days I feel as though I am out of control. Your Word teaches me to surrender to You, but it is so difficult to give up control. Forgive me for my stubbornness of heart and help me to know that letting go gives You opportunity to work in my life. Help me to begin each day by surrendering to You. After all, You are much better at taking care of me than I am.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
