Seek His Kingdom First

Good morning and welcome to Abiding Space blog. Some of you may have discovered us inadvertently but I am glad you are here. Every week we discuss ways to make space for God to help us from being overwhelmed with life. As women we are busy multi-taskers, some of us raising children. balancing work and home life and struggling to keep it all together. This is a place where you will find ways to breath deeply, focus on God, and recognize that you do not have to be super woman. This is a place where we learn that we do not have to prove ourselves, we simply have to be ourselves. We learn together how fearfully and wonderfully and uniquely we are all made and that we need each in this journey; a place where competition has no place.

This week I want to jump into the topic of the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus left this earth He said that He would send us a helper, the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct our lives; to us the ways of Christ and to breathe fresh wind into our lives when we feel alone, sad, disappointed, or heart broken. He promised that His Spirit would come alongside us and help us on this journey we call life.

This past week I have been on stay-cation with my husband. Who in the world invented that kind of a vacation? My husband was happily enjoying our time cooking together until I had a melt down and told him I do not like to cook and this was supposed to be my vacation. He just stared at me speechless. He thought this was the most precious gift he could give me– -cooking together. Finally I went with my attitude to the Lord. And then it occurred to me. The gift was having time with my husband. We are both so busy, that we forget that doing some of the simplest things together can be a rarity.

So what do we do when our attitudes are indicative that our hearts have run up on the shore of ingratitude? We invite the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts. We ask the Lord to search our hearts as King David did:

Search my heart oh God and see if there is any offensive ways in me and lead me to everlasting life.

We have the gift of the Holy Spirit to do the searching and to pluck out weeds so that fruit can be grown. Perhaps some of you need an attitude adjustment. Perhaps some of you are discouraged with so many stressful things going on in our world right now. You may have lost your job and wonder what the future holds, or you have been experiencing the loneliness of the pandemic, or trying to make sense of the terrible injustices of this world. As believers, the Holy Spirit will meet you in your journey, rising up to comfort and lead. Jesus insured that we would never be alone and sent HIs promised Comforter.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, nether let them be afraid. (John 14:27)

Friends, let us encourage one another in the faith as we face the trials of this life. It is time to reach out and offer the hope of Christ.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up. (I Thessalonians 5:11)
