Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.

Psalm 8:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) Jesus was with the Father at the creation and was sent to earth to reconcile us to the Father. When Jesus came to earth, He revealed “in the flesh” the character of His Father. He demonstrated and proclaimed God’s kingdom and gave us insight into the nature of God. At creation, God named Adam and Eve and then instructed Adam to name the animals. A name is an intimate thing and often identifies our relationship with individuals. For example, I have nicknames for each of my children because it identifies my unique and close relationship with each one. In the account in Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles with a man whom we identify as the pre-incarnate Christ.

After Jacob wrestled with Him, the man changed Jacob’s name to Israel, thus identifying him with the nation that God was establishing. The name Israel now defined who he was and what his purpose would be. God calls us by name. He asks us to call Him by name and to know His names that we might know Him better.

Heavenly Father,

Help me to believe Your Word that You have called me by name. (Isaiah 43:1) Help me to believe that my name is written on the palm of Your hand. (Isaiah 49:16) As I meditate on the truth of Your Word, enable me to live into Your Word by acknowledging the truth and breaking the lies I have believed. I am a child of the kingdom and You have called me by name into the purposes of God. And to that I say AMEN!

In Jesus’ name, Amen
