Slaves to Sin

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
Romans 6:14

Why is it easier to live under law and not under grace? It is so difficult to believe that God loved us enough to send His only son in order for us to live under grace. We are powerless to live a life that is completely free of sin, and the gift of forgiveness through Christ allows us to live in the shadow of His grace. Sure…we don’t deserve it. But that is the nature of a gift, isn’t it? A gift freely given should be freely received. Grace empowers us to live a godly life. Why, then, do we give in to the temptation of sin when Jesus has given us what we need to defeat sin in our lives? 2 Peter 1:3 puts it this way: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness…” Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and direct our paths. His Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and empowers us to turn from the temptation to sin. He did not leave us helpless or alone to fight our sinful nature. Instead, as believers, He gave us a way to obey Him and turn from sin. Why, then, do we fall into sin? Paul makes it clear that we have a choice: to either give ourselves to righteousness or offer ourselves to sin. (v. 13)

Ask yourself the question, “Does my life reflect a life offered to God, enjoying the freedom from sin that Christ offers, or does it reflect a life that doesn’t know this freedom?” When we are able to offer our lives freely back to God, we are able to stand under the shadow of His grace. When we choose to offer ourselves to sin, we stand in the shadow of darkness where confusion reigns and life seems empty. Today, receive the free gift of knowing that sin no longer needs to be your master because you are no longer under the law of sin, but are under grace.

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. He alone has given me the gift of life through forgiveness of sins. Help me to receive this gift of grace and live in the fullness of life in Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
