He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:1-2
There are two kingdoms at war – the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. The kingdom of God is righteousness, joy and peace; the kingdom of darkness brings destruction and robs us of peace and joy. There are likewise two strongholds – the stronghold of God and the counterfeit stronghold of the prince of this world.
Just before Jesus went to the cross, He said that the time for judgment had come and the prince of the world (Satan) would be driven out. (John 12:31) Satan’s mission is to rob, steal and destroy, setting up strongholds or counterfeit fortresses in our minds, our wills and in our lives. His strongholds begin in our thought life with his lies and accusations. When we agree with his lies, he gets a foothold or access into our lives. When we refuse the lie and agree with God’s Word, we find ourselves in the fortress or stronghold of God’s protection.
God’s kingdom is at work in setting the captives free (Isaiah 61) and the enemy is at work capturing our thoughts with lies and setting up a place where he can have further dominion. Psalm 91 describes the stronghold of God, the place of refuge, the place of rest for us: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Surely, he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge.”
The place of rest from the accusations of the enemy is in the arms of God; His Word is our fortress, and His Presence overshadows the snare of the enemy. Our place of immunity from the schemes of the enemy is under the shadow of His wings.
Are you being attacked by the evil one? He is the father of lies. (John 8:44) He doesn’t play fair as he preys on our insecurities, our wounds – the places in our lives that need to be healed and delivered through Christ. In order to stand against his accusations, allow Jesus to heal and deliver you from sin in areas you need healing. God gives grace to the humble and those who turn to Him in faith. He waits for you now to rest in His shadow – in the place of refuge. His faithfulness will be your shield. (v.4)
Heavenly Father,
Your Word says that if I make You my place of refuge, no harm will befall me. (Psalm 91:9) I run to You for shelter from the arrows of the enemy, asking You to help me agree with Your word and close the door to any accusations and lies that the enemy feeds on. You have promised to save me and to hide me within the shelter of Your wings.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
