Trials….tests… temptations. We all face these things; times when we feel that we are being tested by God and times when we are in a storm and we are certain that we will not be able to overcome the waves of stress. James, the half-brother of Jesus writes in his letter that trials and tests are sometimes sent by God for our good. They are opportunities for us to grow in Christ and become spiritually mature.

Count it all joy my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. (James 1:2)

The Greek word used in this text for trials is “dokimazo” meaning a trial that proves someone is good and acceptable. In other words, God may send a trial or test knowing that this is exactly what will lead to your spiritual maturity. But we need to be steadfast, trusting Him, and pressing on in our journey. On the other hand, James then writes about temptation.

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under temptation for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. (James 1:12-14)

The Greek word used in this text is not “dokimazo” which James used in James 1:2 above, but “peirazo” meaning a temptation that leads to sin. Quite a difference! For example, God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son. God needed Abraham to trust Him completely in order to be a leader from whom the nation of Israel would be formed. This was a test, not a temptation.

Why is this so important? Testing is for our good. Temptation comes from our own evil desires and can lead us to sin (miss the mark). Testing can cause us to become steadfast in our faith as we trust in the Lord. On the other hand, temptation can drive us away from the Lord.

Friends, we all have days where we see our trials mounting up. We wonder if they will ever end. James reminds us to remain steadfast and we will see transformation. But when we give into temptation that will draw us away from God, James explicitly tells us that God does not tempt.
