The Promise of the Counselor

If you love me, you will obey what I command. I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth.

John 14:15

Jesus tells his disciples that He will not leave them as orphans when He goes to the cross. He promises to send the Counselor to teach them and guide them. The promise is conditional, however; they have to love and obey Him. He says that loving Him will lead to obedience, which in turn leads to His promise of the Holy Spirit. He promises to never leave them as orphans, and He gives them assurance that one day they will be filled with His Spirit as He abides (makes His home) in them.

This is one of the most exciting and liberating passages in the Scripture for me, knowing that if I love and obey Jesus, He will send His Spirit to live in me! I need never feel alone, I need never worry about getting lost, because He is with me and He will guide me. I am one of those “directionally challenged” people in the world. My friends all know that I am clueless when it comes to directions. They are always willing to draw maps, lead me to places, or give me any assistance I need to ensure that I get to my destination. Though I am challenged in the natural with direction, I have confidence in my spiritual direction. The Holy Spirit guides me into truth, directs my path, and comes alongside my life to empower me.

How about you? Have you given your life over to Jesus Christ and allowed Him to fill you with His life-giving Spirit? Have you believed that He is guiding you throughout the day, and that He is your counselor? Take a moment to ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit today.

Heavenly Father,

I have felt so alone, without direction and seeking truth. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit as I love and obey You and seek to follow Your direction.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
