Temporary, False Peace

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.

Isaiah 26:3

Any peace that we have apart from God’s peace is temporary and fleeting. God’s peace is dependent on our trusting in Him alone: You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3) If our mind is fixed steadfastly on God, then peace will follow. Trusting God helps to keep our minds steadfast and our hearts at peace.

The commander of the Assyrian army told the people of Jerusalem not to listen to their king, Hezekiah, who told them to place their trust in the Lord. Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and fig tree (symbols of security and prosperity) and drink water from his own cistern. (Isaiah 36:16)

The Assyrian commander was offering the people a false sense of peace and security by painting a picture for them of prosperity if they would make peace with him. He was their avowed enemy. The enemy tries to lure us into a false sense of peace and security by having us compromise what we believe in and turn from trusting in God. When we feel threatened by an assault, it is easy to seek a solution apart from God. King Hezekiah sent word to Isaiah to pray for the remnant that still survived. We too must remember to turn to the Lord and cry out to Him to save us in the midst of assaults.

Do you find security from trusting in God alone, or are you under assault to trust in something or someone else? Are you tempted to trust in your own resources, friends, anything or anyone other than God? Take a moment to meditate on where you find security and turn to God, seeking to trust Him. He will keep you in perfect peace as you find your security in Him.

Heavenly Father, You alone are my source of peace and security. Help me to trust You in all things and to turn from any place of false security. In Jesus’ name, Amen
