Unless the Lord Builds The House

Joanne EllisonThe last few weeks I have been meditating on Psalm 127:1.

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

This Psalm is ascribed to King Solomon whose great wisdom was widely recognized. The verse could read this way:

Unless we allow God to lead all of our affairs, whether it is our family life, job, relationships, we will find ourselves at a loss. Unless we surrender our lives for him to guard, we will wear ourselves out.

Some of you are worn out. Talent or perseverance and being driven to accomplish are all futile if God is not invited into the tasks. Without God our lives are fruitless and futile. We will keep going around the same mountain of perfection or accomplishments only to find ourselves burned out or discouraged. God alone in the lead produces fruitful lives. But it is nearly impossible isn’t it to remember to surrender all to Him daily. In the whirl of our active lives, we find that we forgot God at home. But God… indeed goes with us. We just do not recognize Him. Well maybe you do, but I find that the busier I am to accomplish things, I lose sight of Him. We simply need reminders.

Reminder that :

  • God wants to lead our lives because Father knows best
  • That God sent His only son to us to save us and return our hearts to devotion to Him
  • That He alone holds the key to our best lives

My daughter is building a home in Greenville. I just got back from a two day quick visit to see her and her precious kids bringing another granddaughter with me.

Before the sheet rock was added, the children wrote scriptures on the framing. Their parents reminded them of this verse in real time. They were building a physical home, however their spiritual home was paramount – laying Christ as the foundation.

A latin motto reads: Nisi Dominus Frustra which means without the Lord there is frustration. This is the motto of Edinburgh Scotland.

Without God as the builder of our lives, we will be frustrated. Anyone frustrated today? Are you challenged by life’s circumstances or perhaps feeling pressured and anxious? Give the building to the Lord. Offer Him your life today in exchange for His leading and His peace. Let me know how it goes. I sense that there are some construction projects out there that need to be torn down and rebuilt on Jesus the true foundation.
